Mask’ay
Musician for Red Bull’s web mini-series Rediscovering City Sounds. Having participated in the renowned residency Red Bull Music Academy I was invited, along fellow RBMA alumni Carlos Hurtado, to participate in a musical ethnography experiment.
We travelled to 3 Colombian cities to meet prominent local musicians and search for the sounds they most associate with the place, visiting sites as diverse as a junkyard, open rural fields, or a carpenter’s workshop. With hand-held recorders we recorded these scenes - capturing sounds like the strikes of a farmer’s machete, cicadas at dusk and the clang of rusty metal - and sampled these soundscapes to record 4 songs - coming together at the end of the project for a live set at Sonar Bogota, under the name Mask’ay, meaning searcher in Quechua.
A video crew filmed the whole experience, and produced a mini-series which can be found in the archive of Red Bull TV, following the link below:
